The American College of Gastroenterology is the recognized leader
in educating GI professionals, as well as the general public, about
digestive disorders. The links below offer more information on
the educational offerings of the ACG, including essential topics
such as Abstract Submission, the Self-Assessment Test - an excellent
self-study tool for GI Board Certification developed by ACG experts
- and the broad range of ACG educational materials and services
for GI specialists. Among the many offerings for physicians are
valuable Patient Education tools, many free-of-charge or for a
nominal fee, for use in the office, clinic or endoscopy unit.

The Self-Assessment Test is produced yearly in conjunction with
the Postgraduate Course and is one of the main teaching tools of
the College. This detailed examination is carefully prepared by
an ACG committee with input gathered from the majority of Postgraduate
Course faculty members. Approximately 300 questions in single best
answer and true/false format, many of which include photographs
and illustrations, are written every year along with detailed answers
and annotated references. The tests provide a valuable review both
for graduating fellows taking their GI Boards as well as established
practitioners looking for a broad clinical update.

Under the auspices of the ACG Institute for Clinical Research & Education,
the College is proud to offer several telephone hotlines to serve
the needs of both GI physicians and their patients. The College
offers a Liver Disease Expert Information Exchange, a service through
which practicing GI physicians and their primary care colleagues
can interact via telephone with many of the nation’s top Liver
Disease Experts on a range of important clinical topics relating
the treatment of chronic viral liver disease (1-877-ACG-LIVR).
For patients and the public, the College sponsors the “Heartburn
Hotline” 1-800-HRT-BURN a resource for patients to access informational
pamphlets about chronic heartburn and GERD, a free educational
video as well as lists of ACG member GI specialists in their state.
Finally, through its Physician and Patient Education Initiative
on Irritable Bowel Syndrome, the College offers patients the opportunity
to receive educational materials via telephone hotline or Web site
through 1-877-IBS-RELIEF or www.ibsrelief.org.

ACG’s patient education materials cover many important GI and
liver topics and are written for a lay audience in a straightforward,
accessible style. Developed by ACG experts for use by ACG members
in their offices and clinics, these educational tools deliver the
facts on a range of digestive disease topics. Each reviews the
causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options and potential complications
in easy-to-understand language. Whether making the case for the
lifesaving benefits of colorectal cancer screening, explaining
what colorectal screening tests are covered by Medicare in simple
terms, or helping patients to distinguish infrequent heartburn
from GERD and its potential complications, ACG’s materials are
a strong addition to your patient education resources.
